Ready For The Shot Tim Escott English 111-12g Phyllis Cox February 26, 2001 Ready for the Shot Its opening day of archery season for deer hunting. You wake up at five oclock in the morning and get your hunting clothes on and begin your long venture out in the woods to your hand made tree stand to be seated all before sunrise. As you are looking around in the woods you notice movement about thirty yards out. Its a nice twelve-point buck, the buck that every hunter dreams about. With your heart racing, one hundred fifty beats a minute you come to full draw. Your sights are locked in one little hair behind the shoulder of the deer. As you release the bowstring the arrow takes flight, and you miss. This happens to several hunters every year. They think they are ready for the shot, but in all truth theyre not. I will try to explain how to get a compound bow ready for the hunting season with help from Fred, an archery dealer. It can be difficult to decide what kind of bow you want. Before buying a bow get information about the many bows that are available. There are basically three types of compound bows: wheel pulleys, one cam, and two cam systems. Whichever one you choose the process to set up the bow is the same. The first thing you have to do is set the draw length to where you are comfortable. Fred says the best place to set the draw length is at the corner of your mouth. Now after finding your draw length, find out how many pounds you want to pull. If you are just starting out Fred suggest you should draw fifty pounds so you can get use to it. After you have a draw length and weight you need to choose an arrow. There are two different types of arrows, aluminum and carbon. There is a science to making an arrow selection. Lets say you have a thirty-inch draw length and you have a fifty-five pound draw weight. The length of the arrow should be one inch longer than your draw length. Aluminum and carbon arrows have a different system in how thick the arrow is. The aluminum arrow system is complex; since you shoot fifty-five pounds ands you need a 2219 and 2313. Fred said the first two numbers represents the circumference shaft; the last two numbers represent the thickness of the shaft walls. The higher the numbers the more weight they are. Carbon arrows are user friendly. Again since you shoot fifty-five pounds you would shoot a 55/65 or 45/55, those number resembles are how many pounds the arrow is capable of handling. If the draw weight falls in between the two numbers you can use that arrow. Since you have some of the basic components done and out of the way, now is when you start to bring the bow in the tune. A sighting system is a must. This consists of a sight bracket, sight pins, and a peep sight. The sight bracket and pins mount on the bow riser and the peep sight is mounted on the string that you look through. Since you have sight pins on your bow you will need to get stabilizer, string silencer, releaser, and an arm guard for protection because it will hurt if the string hits you. Begin the target shooting process at a short range, fifteen yards or less. Here you can check your groups, as well as adjust sight pins, peep sights, and get a feel for the bow. As soon as you start shooting, sight in you bow by moving your sight pins. Fred states, to get a bow sighted in can be very easy or difficult. If the arrow hits the target low move your sight pins lower. You move the pin the direction the arrow hit the target. The sight bracket should have at least three sight pins on it. Fred said to sight the first pin in at ten yards, the second at twenty yards, and the third at thirty yards. This is perfect pin selection for hunting. Next comes paper tuning. You must take your time; meticulous care in paper tuning is needed

The citizens of America now look at every immigrant, whether legal or illegal like a suspect. Weve cracked down on the countries outside of the North American continent, but what about Mexico? In this paper, Ill take a look on my plan for Mexico. On how we can reduce the number of Mexicans coming into America, and increase their morale at the same time. Ive seen such articles as Bush Hopes to Mend Mexico Ties (USA Today, January 12th, 2004) or Employers praise Bushs guest workers plan (USA Today, January 8th, 2004) however I have yet to see anything actually being done. A plan is a plan, not an action. Make it an action. And if these so called plans have been put into motion, why not report it to the people. If the people of America believe immigrants coming up from Mexico in such large numbers are hurting us, why not inform the people that something is trying to be done about it. Which brings me to another item of debate, if we can go into Iraq and liberate their people, why cant we go into Mexico and help the people? The people of Mexico do not need a complete government renovation like Iraq did. They just need someone to bluntly tell them that this way isnt working. Just helping industries is not the answer. You have to help the actual people. Mexico has several natural resources such as petroleum, silver, copper, gold, lead, zinc, natural gas, and timber. And doesnt the world need more of those resources? I believe we do. We should work with the Mexican government to come up with some plans and actions that we can take to put some life back into the people. â€Å"Our greatest natural resource is the minds of our children.†-Walt Disney As a seven year old girl, I was proud to be a â€Å"tomboy†. I never played with dolls, preferring to use the computer as my source of entertainment. In my house, any Barbie dolls were found buried in the corners of the closets rarely seeing the light of day. So when I babysat a little girl ten years later, I was forced into very unfamiliar territory. After her mother left, she immediately ran over to a large toy chest, that was big enough to fit four small children, and dumped its contents all over the floor. â€Å"Here, take this one†¦and this one†¦and†¦this one! He’s my favorite but you can be him today.† She handed me a plastic sheep, a blue bear with a star on its stomach and a doll whose head was bigger than its body. â€Å"And I’ll be Teddy, Honey and Ellie. They’re all sisters and they live together in that pink house over there. OK? Alright, so let’s go!† Immediately, she slipped into the characters of her plastic creatures, doing their voices and personality as naturally as I would brush my teeth. â€Å"Well aren’t you gonna play?† she asked turning to me. I realized I was still standing where she handed me my toys. â€Å"Yeah,† I said with uncertainty, â€Å"Umm†¦Ã¢â‚¬  I was stuck. What name and personality could I give to a plastic sheep? ‘Sheepy’ the sheep? Well, it was worth a shot. â€Å"This is ‘Sheepy’† I said slowly, judging her reaction to the predictable name. â€Å"And he umm†¦ likes†¦apples.† That was the best I could come up with? He likes apples? To my surprise, Mary enjoyed it. â€Å"Ha-ha that’s perfect! Honey likes apples too! Her and Sheepy can be friends!† She said smiling. â€Å"We’re going to have a birthday party for Ellie today. Sheepy and Honey can bake her cake okay?† Before I knew it an hour had passed and the toys had to be put away. Secretly, I wanted to play with them some more. Never would I have thought that a seemingly boring plastic sheep could turn into a culinary legend, baking the tastiest birthday cake in the universe. Walt Disney was right. Within a child’s mind the possibilities are endless. Without imagination, the world we know today would not exist. Steve Jobs used his imagination to create Apple just as Walt Disney used his to create America’s beloved cartoon mouse. Even though some people associate imagination with children, it is something that as adults we should embrace as well. From babysitting, I have learned that imagination is a necessary tool to succeed in today’s technology based society. As technology advances, the demand for new ideas will increase dramatically so we can remain competitive. Although I never used it as well as Mary did when I was a kid, I am confident my imagination is something I will need in the future. Who knows, I might even become an Imagineer.

In her book, The Real World of Technology (1999), Ursula M. Franklin argues that technology has a disruptive effect on humanity. If left-unchecked technology will eventually destroy society as we know it. Franklin illustrates her point by focusing on the effects technology has had on society and cultures in the past. She uses examples from China before the Common Era to the Roman Empire, with a majority of examples coming form the last one hundred and fifty years. Such as the Industrial Revolution and the invention of electronic mail. Franklin contends that for society's sake, people must question everything before accepting new technologies into their world. In the book, Franklin's argument urges people to come together and participate in public reviews and discuss or question technological practices that lead to a world that is designed for technology and not for society. The Real World Of Technology attempts to show how society is affected by every new invention that comes onto th e market and supposedly makes life more easy going and hassle free while making work more productive and profitable. The lectures argue that 'technology has built the house in which we live'; (Franklin, p.1) and that this house is continually changing and being renovated. There is very little human activity outside of the house, and all in habitants are affected by the 'design of the house, by the division of its space, by the location of its doors and walls.'; (p.1). Franklin claims that; rarely does society step outside of the house to live, when compared with generations past. The goal for leaving the house is not to enter the natural environment, because in Franklin's terms 'environment essentially means what is around us… that constructed, manufactured, built environment that is the day-in-day-out [sic] setting of much of the contemporary world of technology.'; (p.89). Nature today is seen as a construct instead of as a 'force or entity with its own dynamics.'; (p.85). Th e book claims that society vies nature the same way as society views infrastructure as 'something that is there to accommodate us, to facilitate or be part of our lives, subject to our planning.'; (p.85). Franklin writes in-depth about infrastructure and especially technological infrastructure. She claims that since the Industrial Revolution, corporations as well as governments using public funds... ... to realize that the influx of technology and society's greater dependence of it may just be another step of evolution. Just as humans grew out of the ape and the hammer out of the twig, so to may the children and their tools of tomorrow grow to become something greater than even we can imagine. The Real World of Technology presents a lot of relevant issues with today's world. The points made about the environment illuminate a serious problem and the use of Franklin's redemptive technologies are what is needed if there will be any correcting of the damage done. While The Real World of Technology provides useful insights into technology's past and the role it has had on shaping our current way of being. The glimpses into the future are less useful. Franklin can not help but have a biased view of the world to come because she only has the world that she has lived in to use as a comparison and model. The society of the future however, cannot and should not be used to make comparison s, for it will be a society like no other-one that the people of today could not even imagine.
